What Is Holistic Eating — And How Does It Change the Way You Cook?
The word "holistic" gets thrown around a lot in wellness spaces. But what does it actually mean when it comes to food — and how does it change the way a chef approaches a meal?
At Anahuasa, holistic eating is the foundation of everything I cook. Here's how I'd describe it.
It Starts With the Whole Person
Holistic eating isn't about restriction. It's not a diet. It's a way of thinking about food that considers the whole person — your body, your season of life, your relationship with nourishment, your cultural food memories, your health goals, and yes, what actually sounds delicious to you.
When I design a menu — whether it's for a week of meal prep or a catered dinner for 30 — I'm not just thinking about macros or calories. I'm thinking about: What does this person need right now? What will make them feel good tomorrow? What ingredients are at their peak right now and will taste the most alive on the plate?
It Means Choosing Real Ingredients
Holistic cooking begins at the grocery store — or better, the farmers market. Whole, minimally processed ingredients. Produce that's in season. Proteins that came from good sources. Oils that are actually good for you. Herbs and spices that do more than just add flavor — they support digestion, reduce inflammation, calm the nervous system.
You can't cook holistically from a pantry full of processed shortcuts. The quality of what goes in determines the quality of what comes out.
It Means Cooking With Intention
There's a real difference between cooking to get food on the table and cooking to nourish someone. Holistic cooking is slower. More attentive. Every decision — how long something simmers, what herbs go in at the end, how a dish is plated — is made with the person eating in mind.
I believe food carries the energy of the person who prepares it. That's why I've built Anahuasa around the name that means "you are healed." It's not a marketing phrase. It's what I hold in mind every time I cook.
How You Can Apply It at Home
You don't need to hire a holistic chef to eat holistically. Start with one change: buy one thing at the farmers market this week and build a meal around it. Cook from scratch once. Learn what's in season where you live. Pay attention to how different foods make you feel the next day. Food is information. Your body knows how to use it — if you give it the real thing.
